What’s The Difference Between a Cold Plunge & A True Ice Bath?
When purchasing an ice bath it’s important to note that there are actually 2 types of ice bath on the market.
There are Cold Plunges, and then there are True Ice Baths.
The difference is in how the water is cooled. A cold plunge is cooled down by an external chiller. In a Cold Plunge the water leaves the bath, goes through the chiller then returns to the bath. For this to occur the water must always be liquid and so this is why a Cold Plunge can only get down to 3°C (37.4°F).
In a True Ice Bath, copper coils are wrapped around the tub and a refrigerator compressor cools the water directly. In the same way a chest freezer cools down food. Because the water doesn’t have to leave the bath to get cooled down, the water can be cooled all the way down to 0°C (32°F) and make ice. This is why it is called a true ice bath.
The True Ice Bath is much more difficult to manufacture and so they tend to be more expensive.
Do I need a Cold Plunge or a True Ice Bath?
For those who just need cold, clean water, then the Odin Plunge is a perfect solution. The temperature can be set to any temp you desire from ambient to 3 degrees. If you are your everyday cold plunger (or want the ability to do hot and cold) then this unit will deliver what you need.
For those who want to really push their limits, then the Odin Ice Bath is the pick. It’ll allow you to start at whatever temp you like and to go all the way down to zero for the coldest ice bath possible.
